      Like another reviewer who I went to to see if this was worth continuing I found this book not unreadable, but completely unremarkable It s mostly solid prose, but with nothing interesting about it The characters and plot are also from what I read very standard Maybe if I weren t feeling an imminent time pressure right now I would continue it a little longer, but it just seemed like my time would be better spent elsewhere.

      with the caveat that I only read the first fifty pages full disclosure the book is unexceptional literature You get a lot of expositional plotting related to a pending pregnancy, but little in the way of real dimensionality related to its central character supporting characters The story fails to penetrate the surface, state things with any degree of poetry or make any conclusions worth reflecting upon in regards to life in general It s why I stopped reading.

      Pulled this off of my fathers book shelf while visiting, and wasn t sure what to expect Actually enjoyed it It will likely speak to you if you are a woman and have had a child I found her fight for independence and struggle to escape from her dysfunctional family and abusive father as seen through the Japanese culture both interesting and moving.
